The first Thanksgiving was during October in 1621. Governor Bradford wanted a time for thanks. The women put pots of pudding on the hearth to simmer. Fat geese and wild turkeys slowly roasted over the fire. They had outdoor ovens too. Pie and cornbread baked here. The Wampanoag Indians came with gifts. Thanksgiving lasted 3 days. People sang, ate, and played games. The Pilgrims and Indians had peace and great friendship.
People didn’t always celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time. In 1705 a town in Connecticut waited until the molasses arrived from the West Indies. President Abe Lincoln signed a document saying that Thanksgiving as a national holiday.
The Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving grew their own food. And today we buy ours. I am glad that they had a good harvest, because without it we wouldn’t have this great holiday we have today, Thanksgiving.
